So you think I’m a timid little cat lover, huh? Well take a gander at these and think again. I’m tough.

Okay not really, but I was scrolling through old pictures and I found these eerily similar shots. They were taken months apart from one another on my iPhone. It’s a bit concerning that I have a specified “cannon face”, as I clearly demonstrate in both of these photos, posing with different types of artillery. The first shot was taken in Kentucky at a cemetery in Barren County, and the second at Yorktown, Virginia. I’m also sporting shades in each, which is quite typical of me anytime I’m actually somewhere besides my apartment (I can’t help but mention that winter has left me a bit stir-crazy).

Anyways, I just found these comical, and wanted to share my issue of underlying aggression with the rest of WordPress. Goodnight.

So my dad got me this. It’s a Big River Harp by Hohner. It’s tuned to C which is good for blues, folk and rock. It’s so much better than the first harmonica I bought at a gift shop on Alcatraz Island for $5. Probably one of my favorite Christmas gifts.

A little info book came with it, and it had awesome harmonica facts in the back. I’ll share some because they’re so neat.

– The harmonica was invented in 1821 by a 16-year-old clockmaker.

– Some nicknames for this odd little instrument are: pocket piano, mouth organ, tin sandwich & french harp.

– There are probably as many harmonicas in the U.S. as there are all other instruments combined.

– The harmonica was the 1st instrument played in outer space. It was a Hohner.

– One can major in harmonica at City College in New York City.

 Maybe I should transfer.

Christmas, life, love

Image

I met this sweet girl yesterday. She was lingering around my uncle’s house way out in the country. It broke my heart that I couldn’t take her home with me (Sailor doesn’t play well with others). My aunt happened to see a sign in town that said someone had lost a cat in that area. She called the local Human Society, and they said to bring her in so they could check for a microchip.

GUESS WHAT?! She’s the lost cat! The family will be reunited with their beloved little miss this Christmas! I’m so happy! Best Christmas ever!

Life can be so awesome sometimes.

My gram gave me this. It’s been in the family for years. Probably one of the older ornaments on my tree, and my very first cat Christmas object. The start of something beautifully absurd, for lack of better words.

Image

When I came across this little guy at Hobby Lobby, there was no second thought regarding the purchase. I snatched him up and, here he hangs, the focal point of my tree. What an entrance, pal. What. An. Entrance.

Image Oh, and just so you know, my family is catching on. My granny gave me my gift in this purrfectly amazing gift bag that I plan on keeping forever and ever. Inside were these cat-tastical things:

Image

A precious little glass figurine and an elegant “meow” bracelet. Yes,  already have one, but it isn’t elegant at all. Also inside was a Chia pet brand herb garden which is absolutely irrelevant to this post, but freaking awesome so I had to share.

Image

Sir Sailor doesn’t know what to think about all this.  He’s upset that all the cats don’t look like him. He’s wondering who all of these other men are…

Here are some reasons you should indulge in pistachios often:

-They’re good for your heart! You know, that thing pumping in your chest? I mean why feed that guy, right? Wrong. EAT.

-These green goodies help with maintaining weight.

-Pistachios=protein

-One ounce of pistachios is only 170 calories and has a variety of different vitamins, minerals and beneficial phytonutrients.

-They’re freaking delicious.

I can finally say that my Christmas shopping is FINISHED and all my gifts to be given are happily wrapped under the tree. Every time I walk into my living room, I’m overwhelmed with happiness. This first true Christmas on my own has shown me what the holidays are all about. I feel so blessed to have been able to buy my family all the things I wanted to and to have a beautiful place to decorate in my own jolly way. This really will be the best holiday season yet; simply because, I see it all in a new, joyous light.

Credit cards and self control

I received my very first credit card today. Yep. Someone better barricade my door before I get out and buy things I don’t even need just to try it out! But the burning question that comes along with this little piece of tempting plastic is, “Am I ready for the responsibility that this plastic joy requires?” I guess only time will be able to answer this question. My hypothesis is that I will be responsible based on the sound financial advice I’ve been given:

  • Do not operate on a paycheck to paycheck budget.
  • Begin with a credit card that has a small purchasing limit. (Mine is $500.00)
  • First and foremost, pay off the statement balance every month so no interest is charged.

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received from family members is: “Live beneath your means.” This means learning self control (instead of barricading the door) when it comes to really wanting that new dress or pair of shoes and having an emergency fund set aside for times when an income may not be available.

According to credit.com 93% of undergraduate college students have at least one credit card and the average undergrad carries $3,173 in credit card debt. No doubt, much of this amount was accrued for nonessential items that wouldn’t have been purchased without the “plastic ecstasy.”

I have one semester of college left, and I hope I can remain debt-free. Fortunately, I learned some money management skills from my family at a young age. One of the most important things parents can do for their children is allow them to practice making money decisions when they are young, even if they make mistakes. Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes and use this knowledge to make more informed decisions in the future.

No, Sailor. You can’t use the credit card to buy catnip.

Because it’s coming…the day retail workers have dreaded all year long:

Image

November 29th, 2013. Six more days.

If you are like me, one of the lucky few that tend to America’s retail needs on this horrifying day, don’t panic. There’s a few little precautions that provide laborers like us a sprig of hope. I know we’re all going to need some survival tips.

This article provides some hope of making the day a little less like Armageddon:

lifehacker.com/how to survive long holiday shifts as a retail worker

Now you’ll read this article and feel like maybe there is a glimpse of light at the very end of the very long, black tunnel. But the overwhelming truth is, it’s going to suck no matter what; and, beware, there’s the possibility you might even break a bone trying to get out of the way of shoppers who are fighting for that “have-to-have bargain.”

Yep. Something like this is probably our best bet. I’ll leave you with one last piece of advice, from my personal arsenal of experience:

Whatever you do, don’t look them in the eyes.

Evolution of the journal

blog, journal, life, writing

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve insisted upon having a journal with me at all times. The blank pages felt like acres of land, where I had room to run wild with my arms out like an airplane in the sky. As shy as I was, I didn’t like talking much, anyway; so, I’d sit and write and live in my mind. The style of my journals has evolved some since my first one which was actually about 4 inches tall and pink, with a fairy on the cover and a small gold lock on the side. I was around 5 when I got it from my grandmother, and I was about 7 before it got put to good use. I’d write about the boys I thought were cute and draw out games of M.A.S.H underneath. I’m thankful to have had someone in my childhood promote writing before I even read my first book. Everyone should have a journal. It’s good to get things off your chest.

Here are four of my more recent ones: the first from my freshman year of high school. I was obviously pissed at the world at that time in my life. This journal lasted for about two years.

Around my junior year, I got the brown one with pockets. Ole’ leatherback was a trooper and was used until my sophomore year of college. Then came the weird days. I got this next one from a neighbor who tried to convince my me, along with my roommate, that we were aliens. It ended up getting a cigarette burn hole shortly after, which appeared after some rowdy get together we had in my apartment. This one had a two year life-span.Image

This last one is the most recent. It was supposed to be a Christmas present from my mom, but she gave it to me a few weeks ago instead. I love the oil spill design on the cover. So far I’ve filled up only 2 pages since I do more typing now. Maybe over winter break I’ll have some free time to crack it open and spill my thoughts the old fashioned way.
